The have a chance to make some NHL history on Tuesday night when they visit the .With nine consecutive wins to open the 2015-16 NHL season, Montreal is just one win from tying the NHL record for most consecutive wins to open a season, something that only the 1993-94 and 2006-07 have done. The Canadiens already set a record for themselves on Saturday with their 5-3 win over the Maple Leafs by becoming the first team to ever win their first nine games , something that not even the '93-94 Maple Leafs and '06-07 Sabres were able to do.With the Canadiens on the verge of potentially making history, we wanted to take a quick look back at some of the best starts in league history and what those teams ended up doing that season. 1993-94 Toronto Maple LeafsTheir start to the season:The Maple Leafs won each of their first 10 games (the first team to ever do so) with a plus-23 goal differential. Nine of their wins over the first 10 games were in regulation with an overtime win over the expansion in Game No. 8 being the only one in that stretch to not be in regulation. Their opening schedule was fairly soft with only five games coming against teams that ended up making the playoffs that season. They had two games against recent expansion teams (Florida and Tampa Bay) and another game against a Hartford team that finished with one of the worst records in the NHL.What they did after that start:They actually struggled, winning only 33 of their remaining 74 games (the 1993-94 season was an 84-game season Keondre Coburn Jersey ) with a 33-29-12 record, costing them the top-spot in the Central Division (they ended up finishing two points behind Detroit). They would go on to lose in the Conference Final for the second year in a row, dropping the series to the Vancouver Canucks in five games.2006-07 Buffalo SabresTheir start to the season:They were just the second team in league history to finish with 10 consecutive wins to start a season, but it wasn't quite as impre sive as what the Maple Leafs did (or what Montreal is doing) for no other reason than they were fortunate enough to play in an era with the shootout. Three of their first 10 wins came in that manner. Now, they still had to win those shootouts, but two years earlier those games would have simply ended in ties. What they did after that start:They kept winning. Coming out of the lockout the Sabres were one of the NHL's must-see teams for two or three years with a run-and-gun offense that was a nightmare for opposing defenses to try and stop. Derek Roy, , Danny Briere, Chris Drury and were all playing at their peak, they had making plays along the blue line and was just starting to become one of the NHL's best goalies. They were not only a great team Jurrell Casey Jersey in the standings, they were a great to watch. They ended up starting the season 15-1-1 through 17 games (tied for the most points in league history through 17 games) and finished with 53 wins, looking like they might be unstoppable. Their run would come to an end in the Eastern Conference Final in five games to the . Their 308 goals that season are still the third most since 2005-06. It's a shame they didn't win because more teams might have followed their blueprint. In a league that has become all about defense, these Sabres were one of the most entertaining teams in recent NHL history.Their start to the season: This one kind of gets lost a little bit but looking back at what the Blackhawks did to the NHL in the lockout shortened 2012-13 campaign is pretty stunning, not only because it was so recent, but also because it was so incredible. The Blackhawks didn't lose a game in regulation or overtime until the 25th game of the season after a 21-0-3 start. Their only three lo ses to that point were all in the shootout, including two in the first eight games of the season. What they did after that:They finished with a 36-7-5 record in the 48-game season and won the Stanley Cup after overcoming a 3-1 series deficit in the second round of the Western Conference playoffs against the . It was the second of their third Stanley Cup teams over the past six years. How good was this group? They still won the Cup even though and combined Jonnu Smith Jersey for only three goals through their first 15 playoff games. Most teams wouldn't make it to the Conference Final getting so little production from their two best players. Most teams aren't built like the 2012-13 Blackhawks were.Their start to the season: The Penguins didn't lose their first game until the 14th game of the season, starting with a 12-0-1 run (the tie came in game No. 8 after winning their first seven games). What was so amazing about this start for the Penguins was the fact that Mario Lemieux, still playing at an all-time great level, sat out the entire season and their starting goalie, Tom Barra so, was limited to just two games. But because they had five other Hall of Famers on the roster in , Ron Francis, Joe Mullen, Larry Murphy and Luc Robitaille (his only season with the Penguins, which will always be remembered for his cameo appearance in the movie ) they were still able to score a ton of Peter Skoronski Jersey goals and win a lot of hockey games. What they did after that start: Things cooled off considerably for the Penguins after the 12-0-1 run to open the season, finishing with a 17-16-1 over the remainder of the lockout shortened season. They overcame a 3-1 series deficit in the first round of the playoffs to eliminate the before losing in the second round to the eventual Stanley Cup champion in five games. After winning the first game of that series they lost four in a row, scoring only five goals against a Devils team that would help pave the way for 20 years of defensive hockey in the NHL. Their start to the season: The San Jose Sharks opened the 2013-14 season with an 8-0-1 mark before losing their first game of the season in regulation in Game No. 10. They weren't just winning at that point, they were demolishing teams, winning six games by at least three goals, including a 9-2 blowout of a team that went on to play in the Stanley Cup Final that year. What they did after that start: The regular season was great. The Sharks ended up winning 19 of their first 27 games and rolled to a 51-win season that was good enough for the fourth highest point total in the league. And then the playoffs started. After racing out to an early 3-0 series lead in the first round of the playoffs against the , the Sharks became just the fourth team in NHL history to lose a series after winning the first three games. The Kings went on to win their second Stanley Cup in three years. The Sharks came back in 2014-15, stripped of his captaincy, mi sed the playoffs, and fired Todd McLellan. Their start to the season: They won eight of their first nine games, losing only one overtime game (the ninth game) to open the season. It wasn't a dominant stretch by any means as six of the wins were by just a single goal, including three in overtime. What they did after that: They ended up winning 49 games on the season but would lose in the first round of the playoffs to the San Jose Sharks. This was right around when the Predators finally started to find succe s in the league with an eight-year run that saw them make the playoffs seven times. This was when Paul Kariya was their leading scorer, Alexander Radulov looked like he was going to be a superstar in the league and two young defensemen named and were just starting to make their mark on the league.1926-27 Ottawa SenatorsTheir start to the season: This Kyron Johnson Jersey one goes back to the pre-Original Six days and the original Ottawa Senators franchise. For most of the 1920s the Senators were one of the best teams in hockey, appearing in six Finals between 1920 and 1927, winning three of them. The last of those championships came during the 1926-27 season and was probably the best Senators team of them all. They opened the season with a 9-0-1 record through the first 10 games while only allowing 10 goals. What they did after that start:Including playoffs they only lost 10 of the 60 games they played all season and won the Stanley Cup over the .
